Recession has started affecting man’s most essential needs – food. With almost half of America eating out, or managing with takeaways, diminishing salaries are, no wonder, causing serious concern among the public. However, there is no need to panic. There are simple ways to economize your eating, without compromising on quality and health. Lowering food budget need not mean cutting down on healthy foods. Just calculate how much money is being spent on eating outside foods. The same food can be made at home with a little effort, for a fraction of the price.
With the economic boom, most of us have forgotten the cooking skills altogether. Instead, we eat out or order food from outside, which burns a big hole in our pockets. When we sit down to compute the monthly expenditure, we find that food tops the list. Though we promise to cut down on eating out, next month again see us ordering pizzas and risottos. This habit also creates a major side-effect, namely, obesity. Outside food is low in nutritive value and high in calories, which do not go well with our bodies. Economizing food bills by ordering chips and colas is equivalent to inviting health hazards. Those who save money like this, end up spending thousands in hospital bills and for losing weight.

In spite of the warnings, public is reluctant to switch over to the safe and nutritious home-cooked foods. Nutritionists are proposing many easy-to-follow methods for economizing and still staying healthy. One of the proposals is to buy weekly grocery supplies, instead of buying ready-to-eat meals. Buy more fiber-rich foods, as they bring about the satiated feeling faster and help in burning calories. Some of the fibrous foods are brown rice, beans, tomato, lentils, sweet potato, mixed greens and broth-based soups. Avoid buying vegetables in pre-cut form, as they are costlier. Long-grain brown rice will come cheaper.

Cut down on fruit expenditure, by buying seasonal fruits in bulk. This not only saves money, you get fresh fruits, which is a healthy option. As no preservatives are added to them, they are full of anti-oxidants and vitamins. Instead of eating pre-cooked meals, try fruit packets available in grocery stores. Bringing food parcels to office, saves both money and calories.

Drink plenty of water to stay healthy. Most of the time, we tend to confuse thirst with hunger. Next time when you feel hungry, try drinking water. Staying within your budget is easy with a little planning. This applies to both shopping and eating out. Let recession be an excuse to cut down on calorie-rich outside food and start cooking at home.
